Old Spyro To Come Back?

Could the platforming Spyro we knew of old see a return? Maybe, maybe not.

Activision kept the rights to the Spyro license along with a select four other properties following its merger with Vivendi Games/Blizzard. That obviously means they have an interest in furthering Spyro and believe he will continue to be lucrative for some time.

But with the taglines for Dawn of the Dragon stating repeatedly labeling it as the ‘last of the trilogy’ and ‘the final chapter’, many fans have begun to wonder what will happen next.

We know there will be another Spyro after Dawn of the Dragon, but in what form?

Could they decide to continue the Legend of series? Is it too late to go back to the old platforming series? Or will they reinvent the wheel again and take our dragon in a whole new direction. It sounds like the latter could become a reality.

Activision's Publishing CEO Mike Griffith commented during a meeting about the company's earnings:

Quote:
We feel these brands have a lot of runway left and will positively benefit from our consumer research and testing.

Speaking on the nature of Dawn of the Dragon he said he was "encouraged" by the upcoming title but...

Quote:
We also know that these properties are ripe for reinvention to increase their appeal, and that's what we're focused on in the future.

Griffith claims that the Spyro and Crash Bandicoot franchises have earned a total of $55 million combined.

His total statement was as follows:

Quote:
…we have identified those products and studios that fit within our within our financial requirements and long term strategies… We are excited to add to our portfolio two proven wholly owned IPs Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. Games based on these two franchises have sold more than 55 million units worldwide LTD. We feel these brands have a lot of runway left and will positively benefit from our consumer research and testing. We are encouraged by these games that are in development for the December corridor, but we also know these properties are ripe for reinvention to increase their appeal and that is what we are focused on for the future.

With respect to licensed properties we are also pleased to add Ice Age to our lineup. The Ice Age movies have been very successful, grossing over a billion dollars in revenues and the Ice Age games have sold more than 2 million units. In summary all three of these proven properties complement our brand portfolio and further strengthen our leadership position in family entertainment and movie based video games.

In addition to these games and proven properties we will also add two new very promising wholly owned IPs. The first is Prototype, which is in late stage development and has already delivered strong buzz and anticipation. The game looks great, it’s very distinctive and we think it has exciting potential. The second property has yet to be announced, but I can tell you it has generated an awful lot of internal excitement and I look forward to sharing more details with you in the future.

Finally with respect to the catalog we will continue to support the Vivendi games catalog business including the recently released Mummy, which was timed to coincide with this week’s theatrical release.

In terms of studios our key strategy is to drive our independent model as a long term competitive model, and as announced we are adding two of Vivendi games studios to our model, High Moon the studio behind the Bourne game and Radical the developers of Crash Bandicoot and Prototype.

With respect to all other Vivendi games, products, and operations there are some very talented people at these units and we are currently evaluating various options but we have determined that these units will not play a strategic role in Activision publishing’s future portfolio.

What do you think? Will "consumer testing" show that the old Spyro should return or that he should stick to this Legend series? Or will they do something totally new and different? What would YOU like them to do?

Phew!

You may remember a few months back when we reported that Spyro was being put on the chopping block. Back during the early days of the Vivendi/Activision merger, Activision planned to re-evaluate the franchises they'd soon have jurisdiction over to see who stayed and who'd get the boot. Well, another report out of Variety says Spyro has made the cut. I believe the cheers on the street were something like "nah nah, nah nah, boo boo".

Who will stick around to entourage with Spyro? Crash Bandicoot, the Ice Age license, Prototype, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and a secret project.

The CEO of Activision Publishing, Mike Griffith, commented: "

Quote:
We are focused on improving efficiency across the combined organization and are concentrating on businesses where we have leadership positions that are aligned with Activision Publishing's long-term corporate objectives. We have conducted a thorough review of Vivendi Games' brand portfolio and are retaining those franchises and titles that are a strong fit with our long-term product strategy.

Who's leaving Survivor: Activison this week? Brutal Legend, the Ghostbusters license (Ghostbusters: The Video Game), 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, World in Conflict: Soviet Assault, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, and the the Robert Ludlum estate license (the "Bourne" series).

Also absent from Activision's upcoming release list, but not accounted for, was Wet, Zombie Wranglers and Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust. Several Xbox Live Arcade titles are also unspoken for.

Activision's comment on the matter:

Quote:
The only titles that we're currently dealing with are Crash, Spyro, Prototype and this other (unannounced) title. ...It's business as usual. ... We are reviewing our options regarding those titles that we will not be publishing."

Before the merger, these games were on their way to being published by Sierra.

These games aren't necessarily shelved forever. Activision Blizzard may sell the rights to these titles to other publishers. They have not commented on that either way.

Activision said it's going to "realign" (a soft term for downsize) the number of developers at High Moon Studios and Radical Entertainment. As for Massive Entertainment and Swordfish Studios, they could be sold off or shut down.

They have also spoken for Vivendi Games Mobile and Sierra Online, labeling them "non-strategic business units", sounds like another soft term for closing them. This could mean the future Spyro mobile games are farmed out, or that Dawn of the Dragon will be the last Spyro title with a mobile version.

For now, Spyro will continue to be developed and published under the Activision umbrella. As for the other titles, they'll be shipped off to other publishers or else those franchises will die.

Griffith remarked further:

Quote:
We are very excited to add such recognizable and successful brands as Crash Bandicoot, Ice Age and Spyro, which reinforce our leadership position in movie-based and family entertainment video games.

Spyro fans everywhere can now rest easy that Spyro won't die. Some will probably be angry he wasn't passed onto some other handler who might have taken him in a new direction, but for the diehard fans, some sort of Spyro is better than no Spyro at all.

Top 10 Best 3D Exploration Games - Ten Bonus Points If You Guess Who's Included!

GameFAQs daily top tens are usually Spyro-free. So it's often fun to see when a list makes the cut and includes our favorite purple dragon.

#3: Spyro the Dragon Series (PS)

For me, this represents the cream of the crop. If I were a more biased reviewer, I might just slam this right on down to number one. Spyro has it all: hundreds of secrets and rewards for sniffing them all out, excellent powers of movement that allows you to go nearly anywhere, fun game play and a massive world to explore. The original Spryo lacks any form of progression as far as new powers go, but stands as the best explorer in the series. Something about the ambling sound track, the quirky sense of humor, the masterfully designed jumping puzzles... something about the very character of the game makes it one of the greatest games of all time. The later installments of the series are definitely good, but none of them capture the magic of the original Spyro. Nonetheless, all three PSX Spyros are excellent games, well worth picking up off the discount rack at your local game emporium.

GameSpot has a video preview of The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon.

You can see the lava golem in motion, a few more quick snaps of Hunter, the magic tether between Cynder and Spyro as well as how combat works.

Is the game still impressing you? Is it what you thought it would be like from the screenshots? Or is it just the same game as last time, only with a shinier coat of paint?

First Mobile Screens

Pocket Gamer offers the first images from The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon for mobile phones as well as the first pieces of information.

Quote:
We already took a good, long look at the DS Dawn of the Dragon version, and the mobile port appears to uphold the stylistic visuals and adventuring gameplay quite admirably.

It also promises an extended longevity for this style of game by the inclusion of six hidden areas and gameplay more akin to a classic shoot-'em-up.

Spyro's One Special Animal

Casualty Gamer has published a top ten list of the greatest animals in video games. Number ten on that list? Well let's see...this is a site about Spyro the Dragon and I'm writing about a top ten list...could it be...no, not Spyro?

Quote:
Spyro the dragon - the fun loving, smart-mouthed, purple-skinned, fire breathing dragon that gamers have come to know and love since his first appearance in Spyro the Dragon for the Playstation in September of 1998. Since then, this iconic figure of mayhap and mischief has graced his way into dozens of sequels and spin offs spanning across a variety of platforms. While his adventures are, in essence, very similar, Spyro the Dragon is and will be for a long time a definitive action-adventure hero that stands out beyond the over-populated humans.

*sniff* They like him, they really like him!

Spyro shares the top ten with such iconic characters as Donkey Kong, Yoshi and Epona (Zelda series).

Dawn of the Footage

I opened my inbox this morning to find Spyrorocks, our admin, had tipped me off that he had seen footage of The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon on Spike TV last night and anticipated it in the morning. I scrambled over to GameTrailers to find it, and indeed, there is an interview with Elijah Wood that provides us with the first real-time footage of Dawn of the Dragon in action.

Click here to be taken to the video.

It's in Chapter 3: Nintendo's Nurture and is the second silver bar of the chapter, following the interview with Reggie Fils-Aime of Nintendo.
