Floridians And Dragons Musn't Be A Good Combination

The Orlando Sentinel reviewed the Wii version of TEN and gave it 2 out of 5 stars for an adjusted rating of 4 out of 10. It's a pretty low score (one of the lowest besides that IGN debacle) and the reviewer didn't even give Spyro his own page, it was thrown in with Dragon Ball Z.

Quote:
If I could offer my two cents, I'd say that I wanted Spyro to be more interesting. I know what you're all thinking "But, Lory, it's a kids game, and they've made tons of them" and sure, that's true - but I honestly was looking forward to a puzzle game (which is what it at least partially claims to be) and I was let down by the lack of any new puzzles. It's like the people who make these sorts of puzzle games all use the same physics engine, with the same five puzzles all piled up in their databanks.

On the whole, if you're looking for a cute, non offensive game, with good voice talent (though the dialog is a bit choppy) then you could do worse then Spyro. The little Dragon's at least adorable...

Aw, well. Who's reading these reviews anymore, anyways? You should be playing TEN right now.

If for some reason you're not playing TEN and you'd like to see what else they had to say about Spyro follow this link.

The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning Is Hanging In There!

According to Blockbuster of Canada the following are the most popular game rentals for the period ending Nov. 25.

Although it was murdered by it's older brother Wii, the GameCube still generates some rentals. Surprisingly Eternal Night hasn't completely killed off ANB yet. The list for top GameCube rentals was as following:

1. Ratatouille

2. Mario Party 7

3. LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy

4. Madden NFL 08

5. Need for Speed: Carbon

6. Surf's Up

7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

8. The Sims 2: Pets

9. Cars

10. The Legend of Spyro

Way to hang in there, Spyro! To view the rest of the top rentals click here.

Some Dad's Are More Strict Than Others

After a nearly glowing review for the GBA version of Eternal Night, GamerDad slammed the Wii version of the title. They gave it 2 out of 5 stars.

Quote:
Unfortunately, play control is not very responsive. Double jumps sometimes don't register, and the Wii specific controls that unleash Spyro's fury attacks almost NEVER work. Luckily the developers must've realized the Wii remote controls were bad, and let the players opt to use the Wii Classic Controller instead. But it still isn't much improvement.

Not even a talented voice cast (including Elijah Wood, Billy West, and Gary Oldman) can save Spyro's new game from mediocrity. Fans of the purple dragon should skip the big console versions of Spyro's 3-D adventure and go for the Game Boy Advance Eternal Night game instead.

Well at least it's not a 3.6, right? Actually it's not much better. However with many much more positive reviews for the game out there, it should be kept in mind that this one was written so parents could decide how much their kids would like it. That doesn't say much about it in my opinion.

Read on, if you feel you have to...

GamerDad Approves of GBA TEN

Quote:
Kids who like Spyro the dragon will enjoy The Eternal Night on GBA. Violence isn't very graphic, due to the 2-D nature of the visuals and enemies only disappear when defeated. Reading skill is required as everything is written in text windows. Some younger gamers might get frustrated at some of the tougher enemies and complicated controls, though. Luckily you can select your challenge level at the start of the game to be easier or harder.

They gave it 4 out 5 stars. They pan the other versions of the game and praise this as the superior edition.

MyGamer gives GBA TEN a 7.6/10

Interestingly MyGamer's score for the GBA version matches the score recently given to the Wii version by UK's Official Nintendo Magazine!

Quote:
Up until now, I had never played a Spyro game, but I figure that any series that's been around as long as this one has to be doing something right. Then I noticed that the newest one, The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night, had a version on nearly every system available including the GBA. Frankly, I'm surprised by the fact that they still make games for the GBA, but this game reminds me of the systems enduring qualities – simple, enjoyable gameplay, fun and colorful graphics, and affordability (about $20 for this game). A dying system? No, just one that's overlooked by gamers who are driven to keep on the cutting edge. But that leaves plenty of casual gamers to pick this game up on the cheap.

Lost in Translation

Warning: This post is filled with spoilers, read on at your own discretion.

It makes me wonder how this could happen, but there seems to be a significant number of differences in story between the GBA version of TEN and the console versions. Now, I understand a few changes will be made as the Game Boy is a vastly different system than say the Wii. However, some of the differences that fans have been discovering lately are way bigger than just a few changes to make the game play out better.

Gathered below are some you may have discovered already, never noticed or may just be interested in reading about.

PALGN Delivers Another 6 out of 10 PS2 TEN Rating

The Australian PAL Gaming Network site gave the PS2 version of Eternal Night a 6/10.

Quote:
Graphics:
There are some decent looking FMVs but the rest of the game looks fairly average with low polygon characters and environments. The particle effects used in the game look stunning though.

Sound:
Garry Oldman, and Elijah Wood return to reprise their roles as Ignitus and Spyro while Billy West voices Sparx. The soundtrack is epic but the low quality voice overs and sound effects lower the experience.

Gameplay:
A similar combat system from last year but with new breath attacks, improved AI and the new Dragon Time ability. There are a few puzzles throughout the game but they are fairly simple.

Lifespan:
Although the combat system can get repetitive over time, the game’s story is interesting enough to keep you engaged.

Overall:
If you liked A New Beginning, then there is little reason why you shouldn’t pick up The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night. The game uses the same basic combat system and adds a few new elements to it. Just don’t go expecting too much more.

Decent, but how quickly Spyro rises and falls considering his last review was a 7.6.

Official Nintendo Magazine Gives Wii TEN a 7.6/10

The Official Nintendo Magazine of the UK reviewed the Wii iteration of Eternal Night in their latest issue. It got a 76%.

In comparison other reviews for the month were:

The Simpsons game - 74%
Crash of Titans - 72%
The Sims 2 Castaway - 75%

They praised the game for its platforming and visuals. On the other hand, they felt the controls could have used some adjustments.

Thunderbolt Games gives DS TEN a 5 out of 10

Quote:
All things said, The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night is a likeable adventure. While it contains many frustrating aspects that gamers would do well to stand, there’s something in the game that makes it oddly appealing. It’s a game that’s hard to dislike when it comes down to the facts, even if it has far too many things wrong with it. Kind of like eating melted chocolate off your toes, then.

For such a positive closing statement the score is quite low.
Quote:

Pros:

* Inspired level design
* Puzzles are a joy to play through
* Great voice acting

Cons:

* Awful boss battles
* Weak graphics
* Awkward camera
* Tired and repetitive combat system
* Unnecessary use of touch-screen that stalls gameplay

Well, it seems as if the DS iteration of TEN saw a few good scores but has returned to the bad.

Spyro Media Friday Episode III

This time around we have a very fresh video (five days fresh to be exact.) It's an animated music video (comprised of Spyro arts) for the credits song in Eternal Night . The song is called "This Broken Soul". The song is sung beautifully by Rebecca Kneubuhl who also composed the TEN score. Below is the video and following that are the lyrics.

Quote:
Oh Holy Land,
come ancient spirit,
take up my hand and guide me,
pull me to shore,
rivers are rising,
look in this heart and find me.

I've lost my way,
your voice is silent,
I need you here to remind me

Show me now,
how to find my home,
all I am, surrender,
let the water flow right through this broken soul.

I fought by your side, ashes still burning,
I've proved my worth so tell me why,
I've lost my way,
your voice is silent,
I need you here to remind me.

(chorus)

Tell me that you can forgive,
bring me peace that I may live,

(chorus)

Oh sweet rest,
find me at my home,
stay with me forever,
let the water flow right through this broken soul.
