PALGN Delivers Another 6 out of 10 PS2 TEN Rating

The Australian PAL Gaming Network site gave the PS2 version of Eternal Night a 6/10.

Quote:
Graphics:
There are some decent looking FMVs but the rest of the game looks fairly average with low polygon characters and environments. The particle effects used in the game look stunning though.

Sound:
Garry Oldman, and Elijah Wood return to reprise their roles as Ignitus and Spyro while Billy West voices Sparx. The soundtrack is epic but the low quality voice overs and sound effects lower the experience.

Gameplay:
A similar combat system from last year but with new breath attacks, improved AI and the new Dragon Time ability. There are a few puzzles throughout the game but they are fairly simple.

Lifespan:
Although the combat system can get repetitive over time, the game’s story is interesting enough to keep you engaged.

Overall:
If you liked A New Beginning, then there is little reason why you shouldn’t pick up The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night. The game uses the same basic combat system and adds a few new elements to it. Just don’t go expecting too much more.

Decent, but how quickly Spyro rises and falls considering his last review was a 7.6.

Official Nintendo Magazine Gives Wii TEN a 7.6/10

The Official Nintendo Magazine of the UK reviewed the Wii iteration of Eternal Night in their latest issue. It got a 76%.

In comparison other reviews for the month were:

The Simpsons game - 74%
Crash of Titans - 72%
The Sims 2 Castaway - 75%

They praised the game for its platforming and visuals. On the other hand, they felt the controls could have used some adjustments.

Thanks goes to Blackholes_Wolf from darkSpyro for the find and the scan.

Thunderbolt Games gives DS TEN a 5 out of 10

Quote:
All things said, The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night is a likeable adventure. While it contains many frustrating aspects that gamers would do well to stand, there’s something in the game that makes it oddly appealing. It’s a game that’s hard to dislike when it comes down to the facts, even if it has far too many things wrong with it. Kind of like eating melted chocolate off your toes, then.

For such a positive closing statement the score is quite low.
Quote:

Pros:

* Inspired level design
* Puzzles are a joy to play through
* Great voice acting

Cons:

* Awful boss battles
* Weak graphics
* Awkward camera
* Tired and repetitive combat system
* Unnecessary use of touch-screen that stalls gameplay

Well, it seems as if the DS iteration of TEN saw a few good scores but has returned to the bad.

Spyro Media Friday Episode III

This time around we have a very fresh video (five days fresh to be exact.) It's an animated music video (comprised of Spyro arts) for the credits song in Eternal Night . The song is called "This Broken Soul". The song is sung beautifully by Rebecca Kneubuhl who also composed the TEN score. Below is the video and following that are the lyrics.

Quote:
Oh Holy Land,
come ancient spirit,
take up my hand and guide me,
pull me to shore,
rivers are rising,
look in this heart and find me.

I've lost my way,
your voice is silent,
I need you here to remind me

Show me now,
how to find my home,
all I am, surrender,
let the water flow right through this broken soul.

I fought by your side, ashes still burning,
I've proved my worth so tell me why,
I've lost my way,
your voice is silent,
I need you here to remind me.

(chorus)

Tell me that you can forgive,
bring me peace that I may live,

(chorus)

Oh sweet rest,
find me at my home,
stay with me forever,
let the water flow right through this broken soul.

Matt and Mark at IGN Disagree with TEN Score

Well, well this is a surprise. I had hoped strongly that Matt Cassamina or Mark Bozon, both platformer people and from the IGN Nintendo section might do the Wii review for Eternal Night. Mark gave the console versions of A New Beginning 7.7's all around. That score was, in my opinion, great! I was in shock when I saw that IGN scored TEN at 3.5 for PS2. I frequent the Wii and DS sections at IGN (like double or triple daily) and thought that one of their regular reviewers would do a new review for the Wii port. When it got a 3.6, copy and pasted review I lost a lot of faith in IGN.

Who was 'Sam Bishop', this review was the first I'd ever heard of him. After a Googling I found these other reviews by him.

7/10 - Freestyle BMX 2 (PS2)
7/10 - Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (PS2)
4.5/10 - SWAT Target Liberty (PSP)
9.2/10 - Hot Shots Golf 2 (PSP)
6/10 - Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force 2 Review (PSP)
7/10 - CSI: 3 Dimensions of Murder (PS2)
4.5/10 - Super PickUps (PS2)
3/10 - Crusaders of Might and Magic (PS1)
5.5/10 - NASCAR 08 (PS2)
7/10 - Fireblade (PS2)
7.5/10 - CUBE (PSP)
8/10 - SingStar Rocks! (PS2)

Mmmh hmm.

Well not a very big amount but out of twelve games only one was lower than Spyro. I can't speak for these games as I've never played any of them but somehow I feel, even if I hated Spyro, that TEN was as good as or better than some of these. Call me crazy but it's just an inkling. Matt and Mark agree though, and discussed it in their latest Wii-centric podcast. Here's a summary of what they had to say:

- They didn’t review it, but they did play it and they think it deserved a better score.
- About the game visual-wise as the Gamecube game. Pretty good presentation and production values.
- Control is fine for what it was - nothing stand-out but nothing bad.

I felt the same about it.

To listen to the podcast with the discussion it it follow This link

Continuing my 'rant'...look at ALL the scores out there right now:

PS2
6.3/10 = Game Informer Magazine
6/10 = Games Radar Site
3.5/10 = IGN Site
6/10 = Game Daily Site
8.4/10 = GamingTrend Site
6/10 = Playstation 2 UK Magazine
7/10 = Geekpulp Site
Current Average = 6.2/10

Remove IGN's score and you get 6.6 for an average.

Interesting how if IGN averaged their scores this game would have been a 6.3

Let's take a similar look at the actual Wii Scores:

Wii
8.5/10 = Play Magazine
5.5/10 = Nintendo Wii FanBoy Site
6.7/10 = Game Zone Site
7/10 = BlogCritics Magazine
7/10 = Cheat Code Central Site
7/10 - NGamer Magazine
6.3/10 - Game Informer Magazine
3.6/10 = IGN Site
Current Average = 6.5/10

Remove IGN's again and you get a 6.857 so a 6.9. Again the average of IGN's scores was a 6.3. IGN gave it the lowest score of any site out there that we know of. I feel that attests the game isn't bad after all, just this review. One reviewer said their 12 year old kids found the learning curve fine. 12 year olds find the difficulty less angering than Mr. Bishop?! What does that say about his supposed skill levels?! Or once again, is he just biased?

I think this game is good, no not great but a 6.6-7 sounds just about right, that's the average of the other scores and that's fair for this game. It's fun, and varied, with a great story. It could have been more colorful at some points and used maybe a minigame or two for interludes between fighting but it's a far cry from a 3.6!

I'm not trying to be an apologetic or a fanboy, I'm trying to be honest and sensible.

Krome put effort into this, this isn't just some cash cow or shovel ware. Get it for the epic and beautiful music alone! I can accept when a game is just plain bad that it gets a low score, I can admit when a developer...even if they're one I like...were lazy. Neither of those things are the case here. This review was awful and the reviewer had blatant subjective feelings before going in that I believe led to a bias and therefore low score.

I just find it deeply interesting that Matt and Mark would actually disagree with some other review, and a Spyro one no less!

Games Master UK Gives PS2 TEN a 4.9/10

Quote:
Really difficult and mean-spirited. Puff was magic; Spyro is a jerk.

Oh dear, just when Spyro gets a good review he gets a bad one. As It's a magazine I have no more information on it. If you spot a copy (It's obviously British) the review is in the Christmas issue, p.84. If you could scan it that'd be great!

Geekpulp graces PS2 Night with a 7 out of 10

Quote:
For the first time in Geekpulp history a game is getting a score. Rating – 7/10 Why? Because even though it’s a fun game, it’s quite challenging. The graphics could use with a touch up though, not much a different to the earlier versions, except smoother animations. ... The landscapes are better than the first ones, but we weren’t expecting Halo 3 graphics. ...We recommend it’s for players over 10 years of age, because of it’s difficulty...an enjoyable game that will keep true Spyro fans awake for hours.

Finally a sensible reviewer who says that because it's challenging it should be for older people, instead of just knocking the score down. Plus they don't knock down for graphics, they admit they can't expect it'll be as strong as something like Halo. They got help from two kids: Nicholas(12) & Breanna(11). If two kids can enjoy this game and not break their controller from "difficulty" then I can't understand why someone much older would find it so infuriating.

Carry On Wayward Dragon

[How Spyro Fans Must Feel Inside]

The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night for Wii got a 3.6 out of 10 from IGN. I, like most Spyro fans, feel very cheated by this. The review is mainly word for word from the PS2 version's review except for the addition of a line or two.

This is totally ridiculous! How can you take a PS2 review, copy and paste it and change a few lines and call it a new review?! This is laziness on the part of the reviewer and absolutely shameful! I don't think this was the best Spyro ever, or game ever, but certainly it isn't a 3.6 by any means! How can they just take an old review and re-print it?! This port has improved graphics and Wii remote functionality. That merits a new looking at. Mr. Bishop who did the original review clearly showed a lack of care or writing quality then, but has officially proven his idiocy here. Clearly he hated Spyro before he went into the review and therefore he just copied and pasted the PS2 review when he had to do Eternal Night for Wii. Someone new should have reviewed it, in fact I was looking forward to someone else reviewing the Wii version. I am shocked that this has happened. It's not just Spyro...its any game. They rate Virtual Console titles, aren't those just ports? Other games on multiple systems get multiple different reviews and usually from multiple people. Just because someone feels Spyro is kiddy or bad they decided to give it to a biased reviewer and they didn't stop him from clicking Edit>Copy, Edit>Paste for the Wii version of them game. This is appalling! Congratulations, IGN on making yourself look so ignorant!

Lynchings commence!

To further prove my point: the average of those scores is 6.1... and the lowest score there is a 4. How did it get a score lower than the lowest variable in the review? Even Spyro haters have to be able to see the discrepancy here!

Pocket Gamer UK Gives DS TEN a 6 out of 10

Quote:
Spyro has plenty of good points: the graphics engine is nice and bright; the plot is told in an enjoyable storybook style; and even though it can be difficult, the action is split up quite nicely to make it simpler for younger gamers to play. Plus it's in real 3D this time, which is a significant technical step up from the last game.

The thing is, we enjoyed the previous Spyro DS outing a lot more, and one of the reasons may have been the simplicity it offered. Somehow, in the jump from the strange top-down camera to the new glorious graphics, Spyro has picked up a lot of complications and bad habits. There's some fun to be had if you're a fan of the little firebreather, but the DS has plenty of better platformers worth hunting down.

Seems as if the DS version has been getting a boost in ratings as of late.

As always, read more here.

GameZone feels the DS version of TEN merits a 6.5 out of 10

Quote:
Gameplay: 6.0
The platform levels are fairly interesting to play through, but they’re not enough to carry the entire game. The combat in the levels is boring, and the boss battles confusing. The collecting isn’t much to speak of, and there’s not much incentive to collect, either. The platforming is the best aspect of the game, but the bad camera views take away some of the enjoyment.

Graphics: 7.0
The graphics do the job, but aren’t anything to get excited about. Spyro is as cute as usual.

Sound: 7.0
The music is good, but not much above average.

Difficulty: Medium
The game isn’t too difficult and doesn’t present much of a learning curve. However, the boss battles are rather hard to understand.

Concept: 6.0
This is a decent concept, but it suffers from poor execution.

Overall: 6.5
This Spyro isn’t as good as last year’s entry. I don’t believe it really has anything to do with the style of gameplay or the gameplay viewpoint, but rather that the overall quality of game design is lacking. Regardless of the style implemented, the game itself will only be as engaging as the variety of engaging things to do, whether that falls into the categories of combat, puzzles, collecting or platforming. There just isn’t enough to do in this game, and the features that are present aren’t challenging or thought-provoking. The platforms are Ok, but they, too, become boring after a while. A slightly above-average game that could have been better.

That's actually a good score for the DS version considering what other reviews have given it.
