No News Is Good News

Well, the reviews have sort of slowed down now that TEN has been out for a while. We've seen good reviews, bad reviews, and a heck of a lot of reviews that are somewhere in between. Lately most of the scores raining down upon our dragon's latest adventure are anything but kind. Today that trend continues. I have two more scathing remarks to Spyro's most recent outing and so I decided to roll them into this one article for a double whammy of disatisfaction.

The first order of business is yet another review. This time from the site Collider. This reviewer, like many of his fellow game critics was irritated by Billy West as Sparx and found the game too difficult. He felt this merited the title a 4 out of 10.

Quote:
‘The Legend of Spyro: Eternal Night’ for the Nintendo Wii is a below-average platformer likely to frustrate even the most dedicated fan of this long-running series. Shoddy gameplay mechanics and methodological level designs make this a poor choice for your gaming dollars.

The second comes from an AP writer who published a list of this years biggest 'worsts' and 'letdowns' in the gaming world. Yup, you guessed it. Spyro was on it.

Quote:
Worst voice acting: The desultory performances of Elijah Wood, Gary Oldman and Billy West in "The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night."

The full list.

Poor, battered Spyro. You can't get a break from these meanies, can you? Aw, well. Maybe your next game will do better!

A Stroll Down Memory Lane

While this isn't anything new, you still may not have known about it. The official site for The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning is still accessible in its entirety at this address. Some people may still enjoy going on there for the music and such.

Interesting that it never got completely finished once it launched, while the site for Eternal Night did receive its updates as promised.

It's Electric!

Review site Electric Playground has given Wii TEN a 7 out of 10! Woo! Do a little dance! Okay, I'm better. All these bad reviews get me really excited for when a good review comes out.

Quote:
...it's decently made and it has a stellar voice cast, but it's a jump-to-the-platform and bash-the-bad-guy sort of game that just happens to use the Wii controls. Some of the powers are cool (like the ability to slow time), though some of the special moves are hard to get right with the controllers.

I think it's ironic that the reviewer said he gave the game a whole extra point just for having Ian McKellan do a voice over. Ian of course isn't actually a voice in the game. It was Martin Jarvis who played the character that sounds so much like Sir McKellan. I doubt that an extra point really did come from that but even if it did, Spyro can take all the points he can get!

Euro Towel

Euro Gamer didn't seem to like the PS2 version Eternal Night too much, saying the following in their review:

Quote:
Good grief, is he still going? Apparently so, because here's another platform action game starring Spyro the stupid purple dragon.

Mmh...that's enough to get any Spyro devotee ready to lynch. They gave the game an overall 4 out of 10.

Sharpen those pitchforks!

Totally Wii Totals Our Dragon

Here's another so-so review for TEN, this time by the site TotallyWii. They gave the motion-control adaptation of Spyro's latest outing a 5 out of 10.

Quote:
At times this game was needlessly difficult due in part to some of the issues mentioned above. If Krome Studios can tighten up the controls in the next version as well as balance the difficulty better than they could have a decent game. If they continue down this path however Spyro will soon suffer the same fate as Sonic. It was once a great franchise however after recent mediocre titles no one will care when the next one is released.

Wherefore art thou, good scores?

Win a Copy of Spyro and Crash and Scarface and...

UK-based videogame review site Yet Another Review Site has teamed up with newly-formed Activision Blizzard (previously Vivendi Games) to provide a bundle of Vivendi games for a competition. The competition is in honor of the site's first birthday and you can enter through the 25th of January 2008. The only drawbacks include:

A ) You must live in the UK
B ) You must be 18 years of age or older
C ) You must register (for free) to join their site

For B all ye youngin's can have your parents sign you up and C is a no-brainer, but rule A might be the kicker for most of you.

Besides The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night for PS2 you could win the following:

* World of Warcraft Battle Chest - PC
* SWAT - PSP
* Scarface - Wii
* Geometry Wars - DS
* TimeShift - PS3
* Crash of the Titans - XBOX 360

Finally, you can kill Cynder!

There's a new game "with" Spyro and Cynder in it. It's called Snowball Fight and basically, it's just that. A bunch of character cut-outs from different Vivendi games slide past the screen and you chuck snowballs at them. It's in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Click to kill Cynder*

*Disclaimer: I don't hate Cynder. I'm just kidding.
