Old Spyro To Come Back?

Could the platforming Spyro we knew of old see a return? Maybe, maybe not.

Activision kept the rights to the Spyro license along with a select four other properties following its merger with Vivendi Games/Blizzard. That obviously means they have an interest in furthering Spyro and believe he will continue to be lucrative for some time.

But with the taglines for Dawn of the Dragon stating repeatedly labeling it as the ‘last of the trilogy’ and ‘the final chapter’, many fans have begun to wonder what will happen next.

We know there will be another Spyro after Dawn of the Dragon, but in what form?

Could they decide to continue the Legend of series? Is it too late to go back to the old platforming series? Or will they reinvent the wheel again and take our dragon in a whole new direction. It sounds like the latter could become a reality.

Activision's Publishing CEO Mike Griffith commented during a meeting about the company's earnings:

Quote:
We feel these brands have a lot of runway left and will positively benefit from our consumer research and testing.

Speaking on the nature of Dawn of the Dragon he said he was "encouraged" by the upcoming title but...

Quote:
We also know that these properties are ripe for reinvention to increase their appeal, and that's what we're focused on in the future.

Griffith claims that the Spyro and Crash Bandicoot franchises have earned a total of $55 million combined.

His total statement was as follows:

Quote:
…we have identified those products and studios that fit within our within our financial requirements and long term strategies… We are excited to add to our portfolio two proven wholly owned IPs Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. Games based on these two franchises have sold more than 55 million units worldwide LTD. We feel these brands have a lot of runway left and will positively benefit from our consumer research and testing. We are encouraged by these games that are in development for the December corridor, but we also know these properties are ripe for reinvention to increase their appeal and that is what we are focused on for the future.

With respect to licensed properties we are also pleased to add Ice Age to our lineup. The Ice Age movies have been very successful, grossing over a billion dollars in revenues and the Ice Age games have sold more than 2 million units. In summary all three of these proven properties complement our brand portfolio and further strengthen our leadership position in family entertainment and movie based video games.

In addition to these games and proven properties we will also add two new very promising wholly owned IPs. The first is Prototype, which is in late stage development and has already delivered strong buzz and anticipation. The game looks great, it’s very distinctive and we think it has exciting potential. The second property has yet to be announced, but I can tell you it has generated an awful lot of internal excitement and I look forward to sharing more details with you in the future.

Finally with respect to the catalog we will continue to support the Vivendi games catalog business including the recently released Mummy, which was timed to coincide with this week’s theatrical release.

In terms of studios our key strategy is to drive our independent model as a long term competitive model, and as announced we are adding two of Vivendi games studios to our model, High Moon the studio behind the Bourne game and Radical the developers of Crash Bandicoot and Prototype.

With respect to all other Vivendi games, products, and operations there are some very talented people at these units and we are currently evaluating various options but we have determined that these units will not play a strategic role in Activision publishing’s future portfolio.

What do you think? Will "consumer testing" show that the old Spyro should return or that he should stick to this Legend series? Or will they do something totally new and different? What would YOU like them to do?

I Don't want the classic spyro to come back... I was 4 when I played those games, and they were GREAT back then, but now older players are getting back into spyro... And younger players may not even know what spyro is (*gasp*), so I think they should make it for teenagers.

Maybe they should use their same game engine they are using for DotD.

Ohh, and Flamme... DON'T TRIPLE (or double) POST!!!

If the series is going to get another reinvention, then it'll be a stupid idea to go back to the original timeline. Sure, there was a lot of good in it, but only Insomniac's titles in them were great and any additions after it only just waned the foundations no matter how good some of them were.

If anything, a re-invention could be good but given how much of a buildup the Legend series obtained, I feel that they would at least maintain the scenario if they decide to do something fresh - kind of like what Radical did with Crash of the Titans, when the gameplay aspects were re-imagined and yet the scenario went unchanged.

The Legend series is awesome so far. I'm sure they'll continue it, I just know it. We can't just go back to the old Spyro now, let the LoS series continue in the future.
By Aura24 on 2008-08-02 17:10

I say that The Legend of Spyro hasn't gotten far enough for it's ending. They should make more of this game where Spyro and Cynder must beat certain characters, such as the ape king, again.
By Neotyguy40 on 2008-08-03 13:50

The should continue with the "Legend" trilogy.
By DragonFriend244 on 2008-08-03 19:22

I doubt he'll come back, but its a possiblity, Its also a possibility that Sierra have decided that 3 games for the TLOS series is not enough.

No-one knows.
As for those that say things like "The old Spyro had bad characters and storyyline", i'm sure that if he did come back his storyline and Characters would get a major boost and Would be as good as TLOS.

If anything, it would be awesome if Sierra continued TLOS AND original Spyro, but i doubt that will happen.

If DOTD isn't good, and i hear the TLOS Series will continue, I'm Defiently leaving Spyro, i've nearly already left him already

Wow.....you guys are pathetic......

I like the Legend Series more than the Original Series myself, but at least I don't cast aside the original BECAUSE of how I feel. Sure I would love for them to continue the Legend Series after D.o.t.D, but I also LOVE to see an original re-vamped.
Do you all forget where you came from??? Why your here??? Your here because you DID play the older games when you were young. You DID enjoy them. YOU DID LOVE THEM!!! If you all were true Spyro fans, you would embrace both the new and old games!
Saying that this would be a bad idea is blasphemy. Do you not remember Insominac Games? Do you not remember Charles Zembillas, Spyro's original creator?!?!??
What I'm trying to say is that whether you like the originals or new series, embrace both! Both are apart of our childhood, both made us laugh and surprised us! both deserve the same amount of respect.....

You guys are fvcking retarded. I went down the entire list of comments and almost everyone has opted for TLOS to keep going. Are you kidding me!?? These games are complete sh!t. Now before i get flamed for all of the f4gg0ty opinions of the little kids who visit this site and like the heaps of bullsh!t that all the companies after insomniac have so far come up with let me assure you im not the only one who feels this way. They all recieved bad reveiws and sold poorly worldwide, most of the sale were due to the fact that they said spyro on the box or becuase ppl bought them for thier little kids.

Seriously, the first games had sub-par storylines but they had cool characters, well designed levels, good voice acting (aside from "thank you for releasing me." - spyro 1), the jokes were funny, and since there wasn't 20 fvcking moves for spyro to do it made it somewhat difficult.

After insomniac stopped developing the games all the new companies basically had a meeting somewhat like this:

"Hey guys, we got the license for a new spyro. What should we do to make the game better?"
"Who gives a sh!t. The dumba$$es will buy it either way, the best thing to do is to make fewer levels with more tedious tasks so that backtracking keeps you from realizing how few levels there are. As long as it has spyro and a half decent storyline we can probably pawn it off to the 10 and under groups."

I mean if you really think that any of the games after year of the dragon even compare to the originals your a complete fvcking idiot. But then again most people that are growing up on games in today's markets are getting the worst of it, they play the games with the best graphics regardless of how indepth or well planned the games really are.
History repeats itself and during the age of atari and the f channel the gaming market was overflowing with cheap crappy games that companies made just to cash in on the console train, but then the market started to fail until designers took a step back and realized that by doing so they were trashing the industry and turned their sh!t around. I mean its gotten to the point where when you goto a gamestop and look at the wii games, except for the first party stuff and a few third party titles most of the games are crap. Whereas when i was a kid and i would goto gamestop alot of the psx games were pretty good even if they were buget titles.

Now you can blame this on the game designers sure, they did make a crap game. But who is really to blame the ppl offering the bad service, of the ppl willing to pay for the bad service.

You want the games to get better, stop buying cheap crappy games that only exist to mooch of the franchise name and start message the designers.

Im not saying that we shouldnt add stuff to the spyro universe. IM just saying if we made more like the originals but added moves and characters and beefed up the storyline they would be infinately better than the sh!tty TLOS series.

Now let the flamming begin since i know my comments will probably anger all the little kids who want to see spyro learn 30 moves in high def and play through 6 levels of continuous backtracking with voice overs by washed up hollywood actors.

By spyro_on_psx_ftw on 2008-12-28 04:41

Oh and just to prove my point i went back and read the profiles of all the ppl who commented before i posted and 95% of them were born in the 90's. Meaning they were only like 5 or 6 around the time of the first spyro.

Like i said before the dumb little kids are the reason the sh!tty LOS games have sold so far. As longs as the graphics are good, spyro can do 20 super moves, and there is some g4y fvcking story to go along with whatever reason they have you collecting random objects in that current version they kids are satisfied.

I've played basically all the Spyro games, and I can say with certainty that the Classic Spyros were awesome games.

Now following up with Crash Bandicoot, that series were the bomb in their early stages, however, the recent games have been all over the place, not really knowing what direction to take the game to.

In my opinion, Spyro has hatched from that stage in the right direction. I must comfess, the trilogy started a little Kiddish, but then DotD took the trilogy to a whole new level, and that's what any gaming franchise is suppose to achieve in time.

I can't say for sure if going back to the classics is a good idea, it would be like after taking 5 steps forward, you later decide to take 8 steps back.

TLoS Series are worthy of continuing in my opinion, just DotD itself gives me enough faith that if they were to continue the series, the end results would be simply Fantastic (Seeing how much effort was put into making DotD a stunning game)

I'm not opposed against the classics, but sometimes, a franchise needs to know when it is time to move on, start fresh with brand new ideas, we can't dwel in the past forever.

sure the originals were good but i could have come up with a better storyline back then, the Los is well constructed, graphically up to date, has a decent stroyline and believeable charchters has more options and unlockables etc

who cares about the reviews the players on the orginal were 6 or 7 hardly expert critics these days the players are far more critical this however has caused spyro to improve or die out

i vote they stick to legend of because it does not focus solely on spyro and has a layer of depth the originals didn't have
By Spyro - an old player on 2009-03-02 18:34

Guys, this is a matter of opinion. In my opinion I thought the score from the original Spyro sega was brilliant. I haven't even played all the way through "The Eternal Night" or played the first of the TLOS series or Dawn of the Dragon. When I owned one of the original playstations, I got Spyro the Dragon, Spyro: Rypto's Rage, and Year of the Dragon, which, I must say, is the best of the series. But when my playstation fried I was 12. I had devoted 6 or 7 years of my youth to completing the trilogy, and that's how I'm repaid?!
...
Anyway, when I got a PS2, I realized I had a slim one, meaning I could play the other games.
Let me tell you this.
Unless I sell my slim ps2 and buy a large one, i will never, ever be able to play those games again. But iwll never, ever throw those games away, EVER! playstation2,
By Hunnter on 2009-05-20 02:45

sorry for that last bit, typing error, ignore the playstation 2 part
