Hind Site: The Bloomin' Graphics

Welcome back to Hind Site. To quote one of the greatest singers of our time - I know it's been a while, but I'm glad you came. Hind Site began as a way for us to recall some of the greatest sites of Spyro's past but has now transformed into a way for us to share any Spyro-related site we found interesting with you all.

This week we offer for your perusal a blog post. Yes, a blog post. It seems one gamer is not impressed by the bright and shiny graphics of The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon we've all been drooling over. He explains to us the technical terms behind the images we've been ogling and says that the crisp, bright colors are more bad than good.

Normally I wouldn't give such a post a chance but when he captioned a Dawn of the Dragon screenshot with this:

Quote:
The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon: Would you believe that this screenshot inspired this entire post? What a disaster.

...I knew I had to share this.

He's not bashing Spyro, so you can put down those pitchforks, he's merely pointing out that everything glowing isn't the best representation of graphical power on a console.

Read what he has to say.

Do you agree? Do you think that sometimes glow and shine is used to the point of overkill? Does it bother you they are using the technique to help Spyro look more graphically advanced? Share your thoughts with us in our comments section, we'd love to know how you feel.

It's a good thing I'm getting the Wii version, isn't it? :D

I understand the idea of what bloom should be used for - just a form of lighting effect to heighten specific scenarios. He didn't go into detail with the Dawn of the Dragon image provided, but I can see where he's coming at - rocks shouldn't be all that shiny and stuff, and even if it is daytime it shouldn't necessarily be THAT bright.

It was an interesting technical enlightment, that's for sure. Myself, I'm not too bothered about the graphics provided on the X360 and PS3, hence why I didn't give a fuss over it much, but it was still a good read to understand the rash minds working on the graphical frontiers for the current console generation.

I believe that Spyro should stick with his new look, because while it does look a bit odd, it is better than the constantly dark look in the first two games.

God... Does no one know that they didn't install the shader engine? the shiny graphics are going to go away once they install it...

Neotyguy40 - We aren't talking about the shininess of Spyro's body, we are talking about how everything glows - the sky, trees, rocks - literally everything and how that can be overkill.

I agree with the blogger that bloom is way overused, but like the person who commented he wasn't as "bloomed out", it doesn't bother me that much in most cases, and I love it in Oblivion.

The shots of that grassy scene in Spyro have always bugged me -- it looks like some sort of nuclear explosion -- but for me the problem with the shaders was a big part of that, and now that they're installed and the dragons aren't saran-wrapped, it doesn't bother me as much. It just looks a little dreamy, but that kind of works in a fantasy setting.
