Future Spyro Games At Risk Of Extinction?

According to a report by Variety, the developers at Sierra are having to prove the worth of their franchises to Activision's heads in order to continue development or to have their franchises put to rest. As you may recall, Vivendi and Activision recently underwent a merger. At that time Spyro fans were hopeful that the merger would fuel more money into the Spyro development team at Sierra. Sierra is one of the labels at Vivendi. Now, however, it's being said that many properties and franchises have to be re-pitched - the way they were pitched years ago before even their first game was produced. This means pretty much two things - A ) marketability to the consumer and B ) lucrativeness (how much money can Activision make from the franchise).

Our dearest dragon is being put to the test, along with Crash Bandicoot and several other IPs at Sierra. Could this mean the death of Spyro? If Activision feels his time is over and/or he's not making enough moolah, then yes. Some Vivendi franchises like World of Warcraft, The Bourne Conspiracy, Prototype, etc. are safe from this re-pitching process. Spyro, unfortunately, is not. Will he finally be laid to rest once the merger is completed? Only time will tell.

Note, this will NOT affect the release of The Legend of Spyro: Darkest Hour. However, it will affect any Spyro games after that.

Keep in mind, this is only a rumor from a magazine. Variety broke word of the Spyro movie, though, so it may be accurate - just don't panic quite yet.

Well, the least we can expect now is hope that Krome REALLY put in 110%+ effort into The Darkest Hour. I would have a feeling that that would be the deciding title on the series' worth when Activision look at it this way.

I find it hard to believe that two franchises that I ended up growing up with are being placed under the hammer like this. Heck, we've seen Bubble Bobble continue regardless of quality and we've seen similar things happen to most of Nintendo's franchises (Donkey Kong post-Rare seems to keep coming to mind here) so I don't see why this should be an exception to the rule.

But whichever is the case, I'm going to continue pledging my support to both Spyro AND Crash until the very end. Believe me, they both are going to need it.

C'Mon... Spyro can't die! Who Activision thinks to be?

Wow.....this is big.....

Within the five minutes I read the last of the post and clicked on "post comment", I remembered all the good times I had with Spyro and his friends.

I have been a vivid, undying fan of Spyro since its creation in 1998. Unforunately, with the other games I've played, a reboot usually spells the end of the franchise. Hopefully, I am deadly wrong this time!

And if the L.O.S series and the Spyro movie are the last time we hear of our little purple dragon, then I'm happy to have spend the full ten years with him!

GO SPYRO!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART!!!!!

A SERIES THAT I CAN SHARE WITH MY CHILDREN!!!!

He could be assigned on to other company making games for casual players, like Nintendo for example. I have seen Nintendo's few popular mascot "Mario", which almost hits a tad more than that of Spyro.

If the Sierra could AT LEAST give him to one of the gaming Casual Industry, I would have no problem with that. But killing him? I think thats out of my question.

In that case, I think it would be better to keep Spyro as a multiplatform character...

I would hate if Spyro became a Nintendo exclusive character, and many people would hate if he became a Sony exclusive character...

Well we saw what happened with Rare's Conker and Banjo franchises moving from Nintendo to Microsoft. I'd be under the same boat.

But still, if Sierra REALLY need to get rid of the franchise due to this poor pitching, then sure, I'm all ears to see them transfer the licence to another company. I'm sure it won't be Nintendo though, as they've been all about crafting videogame concepts by themselves.

Well... Guess that's it. Spyro's all done.
