Hind Site: What Could Have Been

Welcome back to Hind Site! Last week we skipped this feature in order to allow the wonderful interview with the TLoS music composers at the top of our news circuit.

For the next few editions we will explore what could have been, if you will, after Insomniac left Spyro at the end of YotD.

In 2000, IGN posted a news article that Universal was looking for a new partner to replace Sony and it appeared as if it would be Havas Interactive. Never heard of them? You might be surprised to learn you have. Havas was a subsidiary of Vivendi Publishing in France and changed its name to Vivendi Universal (VU) in 2001. VU Games is now just V Games but still controls Spyro.

At that time it was planned for the next Spyro game to be released on the Xbox, PlayStation 2, Game Boy Advance, and PC. Who knows if this game was Enter the Dragonly or if they even had a game when these plans were made. However... whatever came of it, three of those systems did not get the game and one unplanned system did. EtD came out for PS2 and the GameCube. Imagine, right now you could be playing EtD while reading this...with your mouse and keyboard! Some may find this a scary thought...others disappointing that it never came to be. Either way, read on:

The article.

Hm, interesting. I doubted this would have been Enter the Dragonfly though as they were looking for a game released in Spring 2002, which seems to tie a little closer to when Season of Ice came out by several months. But it could have been possible since the whole concern with Check 6's assignment and being rushed through the process.

It's funny though; given the amount of insane technology tricks that caused the game to face slowdown instances, especially on the PS2 version, I would have thought it would stand more of a chance on the XBox. Maybe they pulled out because they thought the average XBox owner wouldn't get into it...?

Another thing that I somehow ended up noting was that Season of Flame, released around the same time as EtD, has a very similar concept to it; "flies" (in this case fireflies) of some description are scattered by Ripto and it's up to Spyro to sort it out, using a specific kind of breath (in this case ice) to capture them. Crush and Gulp had speaking roles there as well, amusingly enough. Perhaps that could have been that GBA version of EtD before Digital Eclipse decided to discard the relation.

Still, it was a thoughtful read. I can imagine how many personnel would have wanted to interpret the text to form their own thoughts about this, so I'm game to see them :)
